With today’s failing economy more and more families are becoming a part of the 672,000 homeless individuals reported in the United States. Though this recession has everyone monitoring their lives a little closer, there are people who refuse to ignore the epidemic plaguing their communities as a whole. Hip Hop for Hunger looks to encourage citizens to give back one community at a time using their resources and talents.
We have chosen to begin our movement in the City of Detroit where on an average night 9500 individuals are homeless. In a partnership with the Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, Hip Hop for Hunger has rounded a group of Detroit’s most influential Hip-Hop and R&B artists to participate in a day of community service. On July 24, 2010, we hope to raise enough funds, and collect and package enough food to effectively assist Gleaners with filling one of their distributing trucks, which can transport up to 40,000 lbs of food per trip.
